With both the Austrians and the Prussians now rebased (see previous posts) it was time to get the armies back onto the tabletop. This would be their second outing after over twenty years in storage!

Lederhosen

Somewhere in Austria, 1866.

In the centre of the table was the little village of Lederhosen. The Prussians were approaching from the left; the Austrians from the right.

No particular objectives: just knock seven bells out of each other!

Prussian Cavalry...

It’s a pity their performance wouldn’t match their looks!

The Main Prussian Line

Jaegers on the hill (terrain purchased at Salute only the week before - Warpainter hills via Entoyment IIRC); Uhlans in the centre; and two battalions each of regular and landwehr infantry in the distance.

My Lethal Austrian Artillery...

…take the central hill and prepare to shoot for all they are worth. The artillery was the only arm in which I was superior: the Prussians had more cavalry than I did, and their infantry was armed with breachloaders!

In Position and Opening Fire!

My artillery did certainly slow the enemy down: I KO’d one of his batteries and knocked chunks out of an infantry battalion as it crested the hill.

Unfortunately, his troops were then screened by a skirmish line and, meanwhile, his Landwehr are approaching from my right.

The Prussians Move In On Lederhosen

This was okay, as my plan was to hang back and shoot the Prussians with my artillery as they approached. I was happy for them to sit in Lederhosen: I would merely bombard them into dust!

Jaegers Dealt With

His skirmishers were threatening my guns, so I threw my Uhlans at them.

Quite painful, but the Jaegers ceased to be a problem any more!

Meanwhile on the Right

More skirmishers causing problems for my guns and the column of my Jaegers I sent to intercept them.

And those Landwehr have advanced into the skirmish line protecting my right.

Neither of us used our skirmishers very well: we’ll still getting used to how they work under this system.

Overview

On the Left

All that Prussian cavalry had spent the entire battle going round and round the wood!

My cavalry were there just in case they tried to go for the guns.

The Jaegers had bottled themselves up in Lederhosen, and were starting to feel the effects of my artillery.

On The Right

In the centre, the Prussian Uhlans had charged my Heavy Cavalry and a battalion of infantry in, as all Austrian infantry always is under these rules, column.

The Uhlans beat up my cavalry, but were just about destroyed by my infantry. Honours even, but I fancied my chances next turn!

On the right, however, I was beginning to think that it was time to withdraw from the hill!

A Better View of the Left

And that was where we had to end the game unfortunately.

I was certainly in a very good position on my left, honours were even in the centre, but I was definitely losing the right,. So we called it a draw, with a slight strategic advantage to the Prussians balanced by the extra casualties they had taken.

A great game, and I’m now rebasing the French so that they can join in the fun!
